Tip Calculator
Tip and total for any bill, split between people, with tip on the pre-tax amount and rounding.
Calculated in your browser – nothing you enter is sent or stored.
This tip calculator works out the tip and total for a restaurant bill, delivery or service and splits it between any number of people. Pick 15%, 18%, 20%, 22% or 25% – or any percentage – tip on the pre-tax amount if you like, and round the tip or each person's share up to the dollar.
How to Use the Tip Calculator
- Enter the bill total. To tip on the amount before tax, also enter the sales tax shown on the receipt.
- Choose a tip percentage.
- Enter how many people are splitting the bill and choose whether to round.
How to Calculate a Tip
Tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100. For a $86.40 dinner at 20%: 86.40 × 0.20 = $17.28, for a total of $103.68. Split two ways, each person pays $51.84.
Quick mental math:
- 10%: move the decimal point one place left ($86.40 → $8.64).
- 20%: double the 10% figure ($17.28).
- 15%: 10% plus half of it ($8.64 + $4.32 = $12.96).
- 18%: 20% minus 2% ($17.28 − $1.73 = $15.55).
How Much to Tip in the US
| Service | Typical tip |
|---|---|
| Sit-down restaurant | 18%–20% (15% for basic service) |
| Bartender | $1–$2 per drink or 15%–20% of the tab |
| Food delivery | 15%–20%, at least $3–$5 |
| Takeout and counter service | Optional; 10% for large or complicated orders |
| Hair stylist or barber | 15%–20% |
| Taxi and rideshare | 15%–20% |
| Hotel housekeeping | $2–$5 per night |
Tipping customs vary by region and venue. Check the bill for an automatic service charge or gratuity – common for groups of six or more – so you don't tip twice.
Should You Tip Before or After Tax?
Etiquette guides traditionally say to tip on the pre-tax amount, since tax isn't part of the service. In practice many people tip on the total for simplicity; the difference on a typical meal is under a dollar. Enter the tax amount if you want the pre-tax version.
Why Tips Matter
Under federal law, employers can pay tipped workers a cash wage as low as $2.13 an hour, as long as tips bring them to at least the $7.25 federal minimum wage; many states require more. For servers, tips are often most of their income. From 2025 through 2028, workers in tipped jobs can also deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips from federal income tax – see the income tax calculator.
