Fraction Calculator
Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers, with simplified answers and steps.
Calculated in your browser – nothing you enter is sent or stored.
This fraction calculator adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides fractions and mixed numbers and shows every step: converting mixed numbers, finding the common denominator, and simplifying the answer. It also simplifies a fraction to lowest terms and converts a decimal to a fraction. Answers are given as a fraction, a mixed number and a decimal.
How to Use the Fraction Calculator
- Enter the first fraction: the top box is the numerator, the bottom box the denominator. For a mixed number such as 1 2/3, put 1 in the whole-number box.
- Choose +, −, × or ÷.
- Enter the second fraction. The answer and the steps update as you type.
Adding and Subtracting Fractions
Fractions need the same denominator before you add or subtract them.
- Turn mixed numbers into improper fractions: 1 2/3 = (1 × 3 + 2)/3 = 5/3.
- Find the least common denominator (LCD) – the least common multiple of the denominators.
- Rewrite each fraction over the LCD, then add or subtract the numerators.
- Simplify and, if you like, write the result as a mixed number.
Example: 3/4 + 1 2/3 = 3/4 + 5/3. The LCD of 4 and 3 is 12, so this is 9/12 + 20/12 = 29/12 = 2 5/12 (about 2.4167).
Multiplying and Dividing Fractions
- Multiply: multiply the numerators and the denominators. 2/3 × 3/8 = 6/24 = 1/4.
- Divide: flip the second fraction (its reciprocal) and multiply – "keep, change, flip". 3/4 ÷ 1/2 = 3/4 × 2/1 = 6/4 = 1 1/2.
You don't need a common denominator to multiply or divide.
Simplifying Fractions
Divide the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For 18/24 the GCD is 6, so 18/24 = 3/4. A fraction is in lowest terms when the only number that divides both parts is 1.
Decimals to Fractions
Write the decimal over a power of 10 with as many zeros as there are decimal places, then simplify: 0.375 = 375/1000 = 3/8. Common ones for measuring in inches:
| Fraction | Decimal | Fraction | Decimal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/16 | 0.0625 | 1/2 | 0.5 |
| 1/8 | 0.125 | 5/8 | 0.625 |
| 1/4 | 0.25 | 3/4 | 0.75 |
| 3/8 | 0.375 | 7/8 | 0.875 |
Repeating decimals such as 0.333… are exactly 1/3, but typing 0.333 gives 333/1000 – enter the fraction directly for exact results.
