Sales Tax Calculator
Add sales tax to a price or take it out of a total, with every state's rate plus your local rate.
Calculated in your browser – nothing you enter is sent or stored.
Use this sales tax calculator to add sales tax to a price, remove sales tax from a receipt total, or find the tax rate you were charged. It includes the 2026 state sales tax rate for every state and Washington, DC; add your city, county and special-district rate for the full combined rate.
How to Use the Sales Tax Calculator
- Choose what you want to do: add tax, remove tax or find the rate.
- Pick your state. Its base rate fills in automatically.
- Add your local rate (city, county and district). Your state's department of revenue publishes it, and many have an address lookup.
- Enter the price before tax – or the total paid, to work backward.
Sales Tax Formulas
- Tax = price × rate ÷ 100. A $100 purchase at 6.25% (Texas's state rate) has $6.25 of tax, for a total of $106.25.
- Price before tax = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). A $108.25 receipt at 8.25% (the common Texas combined rate) came from a $100.00 price.
- Tax rate = (total − price) ÷ price × 100.
Don't remove tax by subtracting the percentage from the total: 8.25% of $108.25 is $8.93, which would give $99.32 instead of the correct $100.00.

The full table of state rates is under the calculator. Rates are as of July 1, 2026; local rates change often, so check yours before relying on it for business filings.
What Is Taxed Differently
- Groceries: exempt or taxed at a reduced rate in most states. Illinois ended its 1% state grocery tax in 2026, though some cities still charge one.
- Clothing: exempt in a few states, such as Minnesota, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and up to $110 per item in New York (state portion).
- Cars: often taxed at a separate motor vehicle rate, and many states tax only the price minus your trade-in – see the auto loan calculator.
- Online orders: sellers collect tax based on where the item is delivered.
