Grade Calculator – Final Grade & Weighted Grade
Final exam grade you need for the class grade you want, and your weighted grade from assignments and tests.
Calculated in your browser – nothing you enter is sent or stored.
What do I need on my final to get an A? This grade calculator answers that: enter your current grade, the grade you want and how much the final exam is worth, and it shows the score you need – plus what you need for an A, B, C and D. Switch to weighted class grade to work out your current grade from assignments, quizzes and tests with different weights.
How to Use the Final Grade Calculator
- Enter your current grade in the class as a percentage – it is usually on your school's online gradebook.
- Enter the grade you want for the class.
- Enter the final exam weight from your syllabus, for example 20% or 25%.
Final Exam Grade Formula
Needed score = (wanted grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight, with the weight as a decimal.
Example: you have an 88% and want a 90%, and the final is worth 20%. Then (90 − 88 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = (90 − 70.4) ÷ 0.2 = 98%. Your 88% counts for 80% of the class grade and the final for the other 20%.
If the answer is over 100%, the grade is out of reach without extra credit. If it is zero or less, you already have that grade locked in.
How to Calculate a Weighted Grade
Many classes weight categories differently – for example homework 20%, quizzes 20%, midterm 25% and a project 15%. Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results and divide by the total weight:
(92 × 20 + 85 × 20 + 78 × 25 + 88 × 15) ÷ 80 = (1,840 + 1,700 + 1,950 + 1,320) ÷ 80 = 85.1%
The weights here add up to 80% because the final (20%) hasn't happened yet, so 85.1% is your grade on the work done so far. Use that number as your "current grade" in the final exam calculator.
Common US Grading Scale
| Letter | Percent | GPA points |
|---|---|---|
| A | 90–100% | 4.0 |
| B | 80–89% | 3.0 |
| C | 70–79% | 2.0 |
| D | 60–69% | 1.0 |
| F | Below 60% | 0.0 |
Many schools add plus and minus grades (for example B+ = 87–89%), and some use a 93% cutoff for an A. Check your syllabus for your teacher's scale. To see how the grade affects your GPA, use the GPA calculator.
Study Tips When the Final Counts
- Work out the score you need early, so you know whether to focus on this class or another.
- Ask whether any low grades can be dropped or replaced, or if extra credit is available.
- Practice with old exams and review the topics that cost you the most points.
