Resize GIF Online
Resize a GIF to an exact width and height, or by percentage.
Your files are processed on your device and are never uploaded.
This GIF resizer changes the width and height of an animated GIF in a few clicks. Type an exact size in pixels or pick a percentage, and every frame is resized the same way. The animation, its speed and its loop setting stay exactly as they were. It is free, there is no watermark, and your GIF never leaves your device.
How to Resize a GIF
- Choose your GIF, or drag and drop it into the box above. Its current size is shown under the preview.
- Pick a quick size such as 50% or 75%, or type the width or height you need in pixels.
- Leave Keep aspect ratio on to stop the picture from stretching. Type one side and the other is worked out for you.
- Click Resize GIF and download the new file.
Only need part of the picture? Cut it out with Crop GIF first, then resize the result here.
Changing the Shape of a GIF
Turn off Keep aspect ratio when the GIF must have an exact width and height that don't match its shape, such as a square for a profile picture. You then choose what happens to the picture:
- Stretch squeezes or widens the picture to fill the new size. Small changes are hard to see, big ones look distorted.
- Fit inside keeps the whole picture and adds transparent edges where it doesn't reach.
- Fill and crop fills the whole frame and trims the edges that stick out.
What Size Should Your GIF Be?
Make the GIF the size it is shown at. Every extra pixel is stored in every frame and downloaded by everyone who sees it, without making it look any better.
| Where it is used | Size | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Discord emoji | 128 × 128 px | Must also be under 256 KB |
| Discord sticker | 320 × 320 px | Must also be under 512 KB |
| Forum or chat avatar | 100 × 100 to 150 × 150 px | Often has a small file size limit too |
| Blog post or web page | 500 to 800 px wide | Match the width of your content column |
| Email signature | 300 to 600 px wide | Keep it under 1 MB for older email apps |
| Vertical story | 1080 × 1920 px | A 9:16 shape. Crop first, then resize |
For Discord, the Discord Sticker Maker and Discord Emoji Maker set both the size and the file size limit for you.
Resizing Is the Easiest Way to Make a GIF Smaller
A GIF's file size follows its number of pixels. Halve the width and the height and you keep only a quarter of the pixels, so the file usually shrinks by around 75%. Unlike heavy compression, this adds no blotches or grainy colours. If the GIF is still too big afterwards, run it through the GIF Compressor.
Making a GIF larger works too, up to 4000 px. But a GIF holds no detail beyond its original size, so an enlarged GIF looks soft or blocky and the file gets much bigger.
Why Resize a GIF?
- Faster web pages: a smaller GIF loads faster, especially on phones.
- Upload limits: social networks, forums and chat apps often limit the size of a GIF.
- Email: a smaller GIF keeps your message under attachment limits.
- Storage: large GIFs take up a lot of space on your phone or server.
Your GIF Never Leaves Your Device
The resizing happens in your web browser. Your GIF is not uploaded to any server, so it stays private, and there is no upload wait or file size limit. Very large GIFs only need enough memory on your device.
