GIF Compressor for Discord

Shrink a GIF to fit Discord's 10 MB upload limit.

Your files are processed on your device and are never uploaded.

Discord rejects GIFs that are over its upload limit, and custom emoji and stickers have even smaller limits. This tool compresses your GIF until it fits. It opens on the Target size tab set to 10 MB, the limit for messages on a free account, and you can change that to any size with one click.

Discord GIF Size Limits

GIF in a message (Nitro)Higher, depending on your planAny

Custom sticker512 KB320 × 320 px

Discord changes its limits from time to time, so if an upload fails, check the limit shown in the app.

How to Compress a GIF for Discord

  1. Choose your GIF, or drag and drop it into the box above.
  2. Check the size. It starts at 10 MB. Click 512 KB for a sticker or 256 KB for an emoji, or type your own size.
  3. Click Compress GIF. The tool tries fewer colours and stronger compression first, then a smaller size, then fewer frames, and keeps the best-looking GIF that fits.
  4. Download the GIF and upload it to Discord. If your GIF is already under the limit, you are told so and nothing is changed.

Making a Discord Emoji or Sticker

Emoji and stickers also need the right picture size, not just the right file size. A 256 KB GIF that is 500 px wide still won't work as an emoji. The easiest way is to use the Discord Emoji Maker for 128 × 128 emoji, or the Discord Sticker Maker for 320 × 320 stickers. Both resize the GIF and keep it under the limit in one step.

Here, you can resize first with the GIF Resizer and then compress to 256 KB or 512 KB.

Tips for a Better-Looking Discord GIF

  • Trim it. A shorter GIF needs less compression, so it looks better at the same size. Remove frames with the GIF Editor.
  • Crop it. Cut away empty edges with Crop GIF so every pixel shows something.
  • Start from the original. Compressing an already compressed GIF again makes it look worse.

Your GIF Stays on Your Device

The GIF is compressed in your web browser. It is never uploaded, and you don't need an account or a Discord login.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the GIF size limit on Discord?
On a free account, files you send in a message can be up to 10 MB. Nitro plans allow bigger files. Custom emoji must be under 256 KB and stickers under 512 KB.
How do I make a GIF small enough for a Discord emoji?
An emoji must be 128 × 128 px and under 256 KB. The Discord Emoji Maker does both at once. Here, resize the GIF to 128 × 128 first, then click 256 KB and compress.
Why does Discord reject my GIF even though it is under the limit?
For emoji and stickers, Discord also checks the picture size, so a big GIF can be rejected even when the file is small enough. Also check that the file is a real GIF and not a renamed video.
Will my GIF still be animated on Discord?
Yes. The GIF stays animated. To reach small sizes, the tool may use fewer colours, make the picture smaller or remove some frames, but the animation is kept.
Do I need Nitro to send GIFs on Discord?
No. Anyone can send a GIF in a message as long as it is under the upload limit. Nitro is only needed for bigger files and some extras, such as animated avatars.
Is GIF Compressor for Discord free to use?
Yes. GIF Compressor for Discord is completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many times you use it.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Your files are processed directly in your web browser on your own device. Nothing is uploaded or stored, and the file is gone from memory when you close the tab.
