How to Edit a GIF

  1. Choose your GIF, or drag and drop it into the box above. The original and a live preview appear side by side.
  2. Pick a tab: Crop, Rotate, Flip, Frames or Speed. You can use as many tabs as you like before saving.
  3. Make your changes. The preview shows the result as you go.
  4. Click Save GIF and download the edited file.

What Each Tab Does

TabWhat you can do
CropDrag a box over the part to keep, or type its position and size in pixels. Ratios such as 1:1, 4:3, 16:9 and 9:16 keep the shape for you.
RotateTurn by 90° right or left, 180°, or any angle from −180° to 180°. Choose a transparent, white or black background for the empty corners.
FlipMirror the GIF left to right, upside down, or both.
FramesClick frames to remove them, or remove every 2nd frame in one click.
SpeedPlay from 0.25× to 4× speed, give every frame the same delay, play in reverse or as a boomerang, and set the loop.

Remove Frames from a GIF

The Frames tab shows every frame as a small picture. Click a frame to remove it, and click it again to bring it back. Removed frames are greyed out. This is the quickest way to cut a slow start, a messy ending or a frame that flashes. Removing every 2nd frame makes the file much smaller, and the GIF plays faster unless you lower the speed in the Speed tab.

Change the Speed or Play It Backwards

In the Speed tab, 0.5× plays the GIF at half speed and 2× plays it twice as fast. To make every frame show for the same time, type a delay in milliseconds, such as 100 for 10 frames per second. Reverse plays the GIF backwards, and Boomerang plays it forwards and then backwards for a smooth endless loop. Very short delays are merged, because browsers slow down frames shorter than 20 ms.

Does Editing Lower the Quality?

Removing frames, changing the speed, reversing and flipping keep every pixel exactly as it was. Cropping keeps the pixels you keep, just fewer of them. Quarter turns (90° and 180°) are also lossless. Only turning by an odd angle, such as 15°, redraws the pixels, which can soften fine lines a little.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I remove frames from a GIF?
Yes. Open the Frames tab and click the frames you want to remove. They turn grey. Click a frame again to keep it, then click Save GIF.
How do I make a GIF slower or faster?
Open the Speed tab and choose a speed from 0.25× to 4×, or type one delay in milliseconds for every frame.
Can I play a GIF backwards?
Yes. In the Speed tab, set Direction to Reverse. Boomerang plays it forwards and then backwards.
How do I merge two GIFs into one?
This editor works on one GIF at a time. To join GIFs one after another, side by side or in a grid, use Combine GIFs.
Does editing a GIF lower its quality?
No for cropping, flipping, quarter turns, removing frames and speed changes, which keep the pixels as they are. Turning by an odd angle redraws the picture and can soften fine lines a little.
Is GIF Editor free to use?
Yes. GIF Editor is completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many times you use it.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Your files are processed directly in your web browser on your own device. Nothing is uploaded or stored, and the file is gone from memory when you close the tab.
