Convert GIF to WebP

Convert a GIF to animated WebP, usually much smaller, with frames and timing kept.

Your files are processed on your device and are never uploaded.

This tool converts an animated GIF to an animated WebP. The frames, their timing and any transparent background are kept, and the file is usually much smaller, often a fraction of the GIF's size. Set the quality, pick the loop, and download the WebP.

How to Convert a GIF to WebP

  1. Choose your GIF, or drag and drop it into the box above.
  2. Set the quality. 80 is a good balance of look and size. Higher keeps more detail, lower makes a smaller file.
  3. Choose the loop: forever, once or three times.
  4. Click Convert to WebP and download the file.

Why Is WebP So Much Smaller Than GIF?

GIF is a format from 1987. It can only use 256 colours per frame and uses old, simple compression. WebP uses the same kind of compression as modern photos and videos, and can show millions of colours. A GIF made from a video or camera clip often becomes 70–90% smaller as a WebP, and looks better too, because it is no longer limited to 256 colours.

The saving is smaller for drawings with flat colours and few frames, because GIF already handles those well.

Where Does Animated WebP Work?

All modern browsers play animated WebP: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Opera, on computers and phones. That makes it a great choice for websites, where smaller files mean faster pages.

Some apps and older programs still only accept GIF, and some chat apps show a WebP as a still picture. If yours does, keep the GIF and make it smaller with the GIF Compressor instead.

Which Browser Do I Need?

Making a WebP needs a browser that can create WebP pictures, such as Chrome, Edge or Firefox. If your browser can't, the tool tells you. Safari can show WebP files but may not be able to make them.

Your GIF Stays on Your Device

The conversion happens in your web browser. Your GIF is not uploaded, so it stays private, and there is no file size limit apart from your device's memory.

To turn a WebP back into a GIF, use WebP to GIF.
