PDF Compressor (Keeps Text)

Shrink a PDF by re-encoding its images. Text stays selectable.

Your files are processed on your device and are never uploaded.

This PDF compressor makes big PDF files small enough to email, upload or share, without turning your pages into pictures. Your text stays real text: you can still select it, copy it and search it after compression.

PDF Compressor (Keeps Text) with ShrinkBee

It works by finding the photos and scanned images inside the PDF and saving them again at a sensible resolution and quality. Fonts, text, links, form fields and vector drawings are left exactly as they were.

How to Compress a PDF

  1. Choose your PDF, or drag and drop it into the box above.
  2. Pick a compression level (Medium suits most files), or open Exact size and type the size you need in KB or MB.
  3. Open Advanced options if you want grayscale images, smaller pages or no metadata.
  4. Click Compress PDF and download the smaller file.

Why Some Compressors Ruin Your Text

The quick way to hit a tiny file size is to take a picture of every page and save the pictures as a new PDF. The file gets small, but the words become pixels. You can no longer copy a sentence, search for a name, or let a screen reader read the document aloud, and small print often turns blurry.

What This Tool Does Instead

In most large PDFs, the images take up nearly all of the space. Photos taken on a phone or pages scanned at high resolution can be several megabytes each, while the text on a page is only a few kilobytes. This tool therefore only touches the images. It reduces their pixel size first and then their JPEG quality, and leaves everything else alone.

In Exact size mode it tries several settings and keeps the best-looking version that fits under your target.

Every PDF Has a Minimum Size

Text, fonts and the structure of the file itself still take up space once the images are squeezed. A text-only document of a few pages may not get much smaller than 50–100 KB. If your target is below that, the tool tells you and gives you the smallest copy that still keeps the text.

To go smaller anyway, use Compress PDF to a target size. It can reach almost any size because it converts pages to images, so the text is no longer selectable.

Your PDF Never Leaves Your Device

All the compression happens in your web browser. The file is not uploaded to any server, so it is safe to use with bank statements, ID documents, medical reports and other private papers. It also means there is no upload wait, even for large files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the pictures in my PDF look worse?
They use less data, so some loss is possible. The tool lowers the resolution of very large images first, which is usually invisible on screen, and only then lowers the JPEG quality. Choose the Low level for the best image quality.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
Yes. Scanned pages are images, so they usually shrink a lot. A scan has no real text to keep, though. To make it searchable, run it through OCR PDF first.
Why did my PDF not get smaller?
Your PDF probably has few or no images, or its images are already well compressed. Try the High level, the grayscale option, or Remove embedded fonts in Advanced options. For a strict size limit, use Compress PDF to a target size.
Can I compress a password protected PDF?
Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, then compress the unlocked file here.
What does "Remove embedded fonts" do?
PDFs often carry copies of the fonts they use. Removing them can save a lot of space in text-only files, but the viewer then substitutes a similar font, so the pages may look a little different.
Is PDF Compressor (Keeps Text) free to use?
Yes. PDF Compressor (Keeps Text) is completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many times you use it.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Your files are processed directly in your web browser on your own device. Nothing is uploaded or stored, and the file is gone from memory when you close the tab.
